GERALDINE TAN (DR)

Director | Principal Psychologist, The Therapy Room Pte Ltd

(In her 40's)

Her story (as shared by her nominator)

Dr Geraldine is a psychologist and entrepreneur who founded The Therapy Room, a private psychology centre that works with individuals across the lifespan on various special needs and mental health concerns. As the director and principal psychologist of The Therapy Room, she skillfully navigates the challenges of a small medium enterprise. Despite being a for-profit company in the private sector, Dr Geraldine ensures that she and her team gives back to both the local and overseas community through various pro-bono events.

As an acknowledgment of her giving efforts, The Therapy Room has been conferred the Champion of Good 2022, a national recognition organised by the Company of Good under the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre. The Therapy Room is also humbled to receive multiple awards including the Singapore SME 500 award from 2020 to 2023, and be named the Best Mental Health Therapy Centre by APAC Insider's South East Asia Business Awards. On the side, she also serves in different committees that promote mental health, such as the Association of Trade and Commerce and Mama on Palette. With her dedication to the field, she also guides young psychologists by volunteering on programmes such as the Advisory Mentorship Programme.

Dr Geraldine is passionate about promoting mental wellbeing in the community. She has initiated various events to reach out to different populations including the seniors. For instance, she has initiated partnerships with eldercare centres like Yong En Active Hub and SASCO Senior Citizen's Home. With her lead, the team also reached out to seniors in Malaysia who attended Listening Lab's grand opening, where the team provided psycho-education to seniors on the impact of hearing loss on mental health and engaged them in interactive activities to promote their mental wellbeing. These efforts go a long way towards reducing the stigma towards mental health and encouraging people to receive the help they need.

Dr Geraldine is not just a leader who's task-oriented, but also people-oriented. As she pioneers various mental health initiatives, she also ensures to bring the team along with her and guide younger psychologists. She encourages her team to share with her their dreams, and does what she can to empower them to pursue it.

In her own words:

Greatest achievement

Being able to rally the team to partake in the social mission, spearheaded mental check-up in 2020/1

Biggest challenge thus far

To be able to connect many different modalities in the work that we do. And being strong in the face of adversities with trusted team behind me!
